The iPhone killer looks like a gameboy

a16z co-founder calls this the biggest scam of the century, duolingo fired it's staff not using AI, and an iPhone fell out of the sky

Presented by

Good morning. Duolingo laid off its translators not using AI, some tenured university professors still can’t load up a PowerPoint and are being paid 6-figure salaries. Wild times indeed.
“We as a society are running a scam and ripping off young people going to college with a clear expectation that they’re going to get a higher quality job and be able to pay for college. But that’s not the case”

—Ben Horowitz, co-founder a16z

🗞️ The iPhone killer looks like a gameboy

40,000 orders for a $199 gameboy-like device that learns from you, point at anything and tells you what it is, and guess what? It uses AI.

The r1 launch faced its fair share of criticism. The biggest one being “Why not make this into an App?. TLDR is with AI you’re breaking into new territories and can have new consumption patterns and you own the whole ecosystem end-to-end (Apple?). Here’s the long response by the r1 founder - if you got time.

Context: The r1 launch is part of a new wave of “AI Physical Hardware” that is circulating in the tech industry:

  • Humane AI pin can clip onto your clothes (but don’t forget to take it off before putting it in the washing machine)

  • Tab AI raised $1.9 million to, I quote “replace god”, with an AI necklace

  • Samsung Ballie was announced at CES 2024 which is literally an AI-powered ball that rolls on the ground

Looking ahead: Technology evolves every ~15 years, with the 1977 computer, 1991 Laptop, 2007 iPhone, and now in 2024 we’ll have…Apple Vision? Fact is no one can predict consumer patterns. Screens as we know them will continue to exist, Apps on our phones will still be used, iPhones will still be sold out everywhere and I know I don’t want a 5 inch computer taped on my chest when I go to the bathroom. Wild times ahead!

🗞️ If you add “AI”, you get more dough?

1 out of every 3 dollars invested by U.S. VCs was injected into AI startups just until Christmas; Canadian VCs invested over $2 billion in 84 AI-focused startups up until end of 2023 (according to CVCA);

FYI: There’s over 30% decline or $72 billion startup investments from U.S. VCs since 2022. Bags are tightening and they want to see more “traction”. So, if you’re not getting investments even after you plastered “AI” all around your deck, it’s ok. Look for the next big thing, like Quantum Computing

Looking ahead: Startups - AI or not - don’t necessarily need VC funding now to grow or be sustainable. Low customer acquisition cost, correct growth loops from B2B or Influencer partnerships, and small innovations in target audience or value prop can make wonders. Midjourney, AI Image generator startup, generates over $200 million in revenue with 40 employees — all without raising a cent from outside investors.

💼 Jobs AI can’t do yet

🤖 Automation of the day

A simple but effective one.

Instead of manually doing: You click publish on your blog, go to slack and tag your social media person, they copy the URL, sign in to Twitter, type two-factor authentication code, type tweet, and paste the blog post URL

Automate it: If post published on your blog (e.g. Webflow, Medium, Ghost…), then post a tweet with the link to the blog

Tool to use: Make

BONUS: Instead of just posting the URL with generic text, repurpose the blog post to a tweet format with AI.

🛠️ Tools to use

  • Save +4 hrs weekly with remote Collaboration: If you run teams of +10 virtually across different time zones like us and can’t find a time to meet, send each other Looms

💨 Mind Farts

  • If an iPhone can survive a 16k-foot fall from a plane and Stanley cup can survive a car fire, why can’t we survive a few negative comments on a YouTube video we spent 3 days making?

  • Attending six events back to back in a week will give you COVID even if you somehow managed to skip it for almost 3 years

  • Doing the things you hate can make you live longer by increasing your willpower (look up Huberman’s podcast about tenacity)
